- Ashumet Holly Audubon Sanctuary: The sanctuary’s more than 100 acres of woodlands for a refreshing change of scenery from the beaches of Cape Cod.In East Falmouth, known for its 65 varieties of holly trees.
- Long Pasture Audubon Sanctuary: Ponds, vernal pools, buttonbush swamp, salt marsh, and other habitats make this 110-acre sanctuary a haven for many species of wildlife in Cummaquid.
- Skunknet River Audubon Sanctuary: Explore the sanctuary’s more than 100 acres of woodlands for a refreshing change of scenery from the beaches of Cape Cod in Barnstable.
- Wellfleet Audubon Sanctuary: Wildlife trail off Route 6 in South Wellfleet wends through the 1,100 acres of salt marsh, sandy beach, pine woodland, freshwater pond, and rare heathland.
- Town of Barnstable trails: Barnstable, the Cape’s largest town and located in the Mid-Cape area, has a number of conservation trails.
- Cape Cod Canal: The flat paved service roads on each side of the Cape Cod Canal are each 7 miles long, with views of the canal and the canal bridges and are ideal for biking and walking.
- Cape Cod National Seashore: The federally designated Seashore on the Outer Cape offers 11 self-guided hiking trails.
- Cape Cod Pathways: The pathways project is a Cape-wide network of walking trails and offers a directory of Cape Cod walking trails.
- Cape Cod Rail Trail: The 26-mile paved trail begins in South Dennis and follows an old railroad bed to Wellfleet.
- Nickerson State Park: This popular Brewster state park has an extensive network of bicycle trails, with many steep hills and winding paths.
- Shining Sea Bikeway: Now extends 10.7 miles from County Road in North Falmouth to the Steamship Authority parking lot in Woods Hole (bike racks available). The spectacular views offered from the freshly minted 7-mile section section of the Shining Sea Bikeway are right out of the Katharine Lee Bates song — “America the Beautiful” — from which the path gets its name. The trail offers views of Martha’s Vineyard and Little Harbor.
CAPE COD BIKING TRAILS:
- Cape Cod Rail Trail: 22 miles, Dennis to Wellfleet; follows Old Colony Railroad route from Route 134 in South Dennis through Harwich, Brewster, Orleans, Eastham and into Wellfleet; relatively flat, sheltered from wind; often crosses main roads; access points and parking areas include Route 134 trailhead, Headwaters Drive near Route 124 in Harwich, Salt Pond Visitor Center in Eastham and Lecount Hollow Road trailhead in South Wellfleet.C
